Microsoft Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals SC-900
I am happy to announce that I achieved my Microsoft Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals SC-900 Certification.
SC-900 is the entry level security exam for a wide array of Microsoft products. I put products there, plural, because SC-900 is more than just understanding Azure products that fit the identity/security mold. You will also be tested on Microsoft 365 products, as well as identity products such as Active Directory in depth. Importantly, the exam is probably half and half Azure and Microsoft 365 products. If you are looking for solely Azure products, then AZ-500 may be a better exam (But is obviously much more difficult). The types of questions in SC-900 that involve M365 are often around security tools such as Microsoft Defender For Office 365/Identity/Endpoint/CloudApps, or around compliance tools such as “eDiscovery”.
If you’ve already sat AZ-900, then this exam might be a little easier as some Azure concepts and products may be familiar to you, but it’s not a pre-requisite. Some even say that SC-900 is easier than AZ-900 because it’s a bit more concrete and less theoretical.

Like most 900 level exams from Microsoft, the SC-900 exam offers a “Training Day” from Microsoft. These training days are essentially free webinars
where Microsoft will run a very high level overview of the topics covered in the exam. It’s usually not enough to pass the exam outright, but it’s a great intro to the exam curriculum.
However, the most important thing about these webinars is that if you watch them, you will get a free Voucher to sit the exam.
Thoughts?
So is the exam worth it? I personally think it is. Security and compliance is often an overlooked subject in cloud computing. Especially for technical roles such as developers or architects that utilize the cloud, but don’t necessarily have security fundamentals front of mind. SC-900 gets the ball rolling to at least consider various aspects of security when creating a solution not just on Microsoft products, but any computing solution in general. Many people have said you can study and pass SC-900 in a matter of weeks, not months, which also means it’s a great entry level exam for dipping your toes into the certification pathway.
