How To Configure Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 To Access Unifi UDM Pro VPN Tunnel

In this tutorial you will learn how to configure Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 to access Unifi UDM Pro VPN tunnel. You will then be able to use your Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 to VPN into your UDM Pro and browse and access your network files or even remote access other systems on the network.

How to install VPN client software on Ubuntu Desktop 20.04

  1. Log into your Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 and open up the Terminal.
  2. Elevate your Terminal Access
sudo -s

3. We will now need to install the L2TP VPN package. 

sudo apt install network-manager-l2tp network-manager-l2tp-gnome

4. You need to restart your computer to see “Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)” in your VPN access manager.

5. Log back onto your Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 and from here we will use the GUI.

6. Click on your network icon and it should provide a drop-down menu.

7. Expand [Wired Connected].

8. Click on [Wired Settings] to reveal the Network Settings window.

9. From here you will see the VPN area. Click on the [+] symbol to configure a new Unifi UDM Pro VPN connection.

10. Within the Add VPN window click on the Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) option. 

11. In the following window make sure to:

    • Name your VPN connection
    • Type in the WAN IP of your UDM Pro
    • Type in your username
    • If you click on the question mark you have a few options to play with on how to go about saving your password or to prompt every time.

12. Now click the [IPsec Settings] button.

13. Check mark the box for enable IPsec tunnel to L2TP host. Enter your Pre-shared Key and click the [OK] button.

14. Now click on the green [Add] button.

15. You have now successfully configured your Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 to access your Unifi UDM Pro VPN tunnel.
